About IB

Intelligence Bureau Intelligence Bureau was originally part of the British Raj’s Intelligence Bureau, which Major of the British Army established, Major General Sir Charles MacGregor, who, at the time, was the Quartermaster General and Head of the Intelligence Department for the British Indian Army in Shimla in 1885. Before his appointment, Queen Victoria appointed Major General Sir MacGregor to the British Indian Empire in 1885. The mission of the IB was to observe Russian troops’ deployments in Afghanistan and to be wary of the possibility of a Russian attack on British India through the North-West towards the end of the 19th century.
In the wake of the declaration of independence of Pakistan through the British Crown, The IB, along with the armed forces, was split by a Pakistan IB established in Karachi. Since then, the IB has been the oldest of the intelligence community, and the other is that of the Military Intelligence (MI) of Pakistan’s military. The IB was the first and primary intelligence agency to coordinate foreign and strategic intelligence as well as counter-espionage and domestic matters.
