The assets and lands of the Ex-state forces and the land used for defense purposes were transferred to the Government of Pakistan (Ministry of Defence) through constitutional provisions. These assets were recorded and consolidated by Military Estates Officers. Currently, Pakistan has 11 Military Estate Circles.
Since British rule, there have been defense lands and cantonments. Barrackpore was the first location to establish a Cantonment. Pakistan inherited 23 Cantonment Boards. The number and size of Cantonment boards have increased to meet the requirements of the defense services. There are now 44 Cantonment boards.
